The mission of the ESL Department in PHS is to promote and enhance academic excellence for Limited English Proficient (LEP) students through a variety of learning experiences and opportunities designed to ensure successful aquisition of the English language before entering the mainstream.

Besides English classes, we also have "Sheltered" classes in every other subjects where the ESL students are placed. Curriculum is modified and  students are also supported with TAs speaking in many of the students' native languages.

Students are often monitored closely as they progress and are tested so they are placed in the right place even if it is during the year. The ACCESS scores are vey important in this regard.
