WELCOME
The English as a Second Language department at Palatine High School is the largest program in the district and cater to a large population. It is designed to assist English Language Learners in acquiring English language skills in areas such as speaking, listening, reading, & writing. At PHS, we have developed a community of respect, comfort, and trust among students and teachers from around the world to work together in advancing young people's education as they embark on a new journey in the United States.
LEVEL 1: Entry
E104, E105, E106
This entering level consists of three courses designed to meet the needs of English language learners who have recently arrived with little or no English language skills. In this level, students will acquire listening comprehension, oral language, vocabulary, and basic reading and writing skills.
LEVEL 2: Beginner
E111, E112, E113
Up to three units
This ESL course is designed to meet the needs of English language learners. This beginning level course is designed to meet the individual needs in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and the acculturation process.
LEVEL 3 : Intermediate E121, E122
This ESL course is designed to meet the needs of English language learners who have successfully
completed Level 2 . This intermediate level course focuses on building reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar skills.
LEVEL 4: Advanced
E131, E132
This advanced ESL course is designed to meet the needs of English language learners who have successfully completed Level 3 or are placed depending on the placement tests or ACCESS scores.. All language skills are practiced and refined with an emphasis on academic reading and writing.
LEVEL 5: Transitional
E151 / 141
Placement through staff recommendation and/or successful completion of E131 and E132 This transitional ESL course is designed to further students’ development in English through intensive listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This course is designed to transition English language learners into mainstream English classes
